Researchers Find Antibody That ‘Neutralizes’ Zika Virus

The antibody, called ZIKV-117, also protected the fetus in pregnant mice infected with the virus, the researchers reported today in the journal Nature. Zika is believed to cause microcephaly, unusually small heads, and other congenital malformations in children born to infected women.
Similar protection studies in primates are warranted, and if the findings hold up, ZIKV-177 could be developed as a protective antibody treatment for pregnant women at risk of Zika infection, the researchers concluded.
The findings may also aid efforts to develop an effective anti-Zika vaccine, said James Crowe Jr., M.D., director of the Vanderbilt Vaccine Center and co-corresponding author of the paper with Michael S. Diamond, M.D., Ph.D., at Washington University.
“These naturally occurring human antibodies isolated from humans represent the first medical intervention that prevents Zika infection and damage to fetuses,” said Crowe, who also is Ann Scott Carell Professor in the Departments of Pediatrics and Pathology, Microbiology & Immunology in the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.
“We’re excited because the data suggests we may have antibody treatments in hand that could be developed for use in pregnant women,” he said.
“The remarkable potency and breadth of inhibition by ZIKV-117 has great promise,” Diamond said, “as it was able to inhibit infection by strains from both Africa and America in cell culture and in animals, including during pregnancy.”
Diamond is associate director of The Andrew M. and Jane M. Bursky Center for Human Immunology & Immunotherapy Programs at Washington University.
Zika is a mosquito-borne virus that has emerged as a global public health threat. In addition to its association with congenital birth defects, Zika has been linked to Guillain-Barre syndrome, a neurological disorder that can lead to paralysis and death.
Since a major outbreak was reported in Brazil last year, Zika infections transmitted by mosquitoes have been reported throughout Africa, Asia, the Pacific, and the Americas, including Miami-Dade County, Florida.
During the past 15 years, Crowe and his colleagues have developed a high-efficiency method for isolating human monoclonal antibodies that can neutralize a wide range of viruses, from Ebola to HIV.
The Crowe and Diamond laboratories have collaborated recently on several projects including the generation of protective human monoclonal antibodies against Dengue, West Nile, Chikungunya and now Zika viruses.
Monoclonal antibodies are made from a single clone of B cells, a type of white blood cell, that have been fused to myeloma (cancer) cells to form fast-growing “hybridomas.” This allows researchers to quickly generate large quantities of antibodies against specific viral targets.
In the current study, the researchers isolated antibodies from the blood of people who’d been previously infected with the Zika virus in different parts of the world. The antibodies reacted to the envelope or “E” protein on the surface of the virus.
The researchers then generated a variety of monoclonal antibodies. In cell culture studies, they identified one, ZIKV-117, which broadly neutralized several different strains of the virus. In mice infected by the Zika virus, injection of the antibody markedly reduced disease and mortality, and reduced transmission from mother to fetus.
The paper’s first authors were Gopal Sapparapu, Ph.D., research assistant professor of Pediatrics in the Crowe lab, and by Estefania Fernandez, a graduate student in Diamond’s lab. Nurgun Kose, senior research specialist in Crowe’s lab, made the antibodies.

10 THINGS YOU SHOULD REALLY ASK A UNIVERSITY

But what should you ask?

It can be easy to simply ask about the scholarship opportunities they offer. However institutions receive hundreds of such enquiries, so your message won’t stand out. The more unique or personalised your question or enquiry, the more likely it will resonate with the university staff member who reads it; it will be something different from what they see normally.
There are a lot of other things you should be asking. Just think of everything which you would want to know about a university you might be studying at (especially one in a completely different country from your own).
Here are some ideas to get you thinking about what you may ask...

‘Where can I live?’

Do you know what accommodation the institution offers? Is this accommodation on or off-campus? How expensive is this accommodation and what’s included? Are you guaranteed a place in on-campus accommodation in your first year? What support is there to find accommodation off-campus?

‘What’s the international student body like?’

What proportion of students currently enrolled are from overseas? What countries do these students come from? Are there many students from your own country? If so, are there any specific clubs or societies which are tailored to students from here?

‘How is the course taught?’

Is the course taught through lectures, lab work or seminars? How many students are in these classes? What is the structure of a normal lecture/seminar? Will you work independently, or with one or more students as part of group-work? How many hours can you expect to spend on campus each week? Does this include face-time with your professors in their office hours?

‘What would you study specifically on a course?’

Can you get some specific details on the material you’ll be studying i.e. specific authors or cases? How much depth would you go into? Do you get to choose the modules you take? Or is there a core curriculum which is mandatory for everyone?

‘What have previous graduates on this course gone on to do?’

Does the university have any notable alumni in your field? Perhaps someone famous who you look up to? What companies or organisations are these alumni now working for which you might be able to apply to later too? Could you get work experience with one of these companies or alongside one of these individuals? Are there any unusual paths which graduates have gone down which might not be obvious?

‘What should I study if I want to study at a higher level later?’

If you have aspirations to study at postgraduate level or a further study level, what should you study before that (i.e. at undergraduate level)? What courses does the university offer which you could study which would allow you to make this progression? Are there pathways or pre-masters courses available?

‘Can you confirm the application deadlines?’

When are these deadlines? Are there different deadlines for students from different countries? What are the deadlines for scholarship applications for these courses? What do you need to provide by this date?

‘What’s the local area like?’

Why should you study in that region? What are the main attractions? Is there much of a nightlife? How easy is it to get around by public transport? Is it a major student town, or a mix of ages and backgrounds?

‘How can the university help me find employment after I complete my course?’

Does the university have links to local, national or international industries or organisations? Are any of these in the same field as you’re studying? Is there a careers department or service on campus? Are there are opportunities to complete work experience or practical work as part of your course?

And if you really must, ask about scholarships (but ask the right way)...

Read our guide to enquiring about scholarships the correct way. Universities will respond to enquiries about scholarships; but only if they’re specific and indicate that the student is passionate about studying at that institution.

Direct 200 Level University Admission Without JAMB Now!

Has admission become your source of headache? Did you fail JAMB or Post JAMB(UTME) , are you a fresh secondary graduate (with or without deficiency in your O level result) or simply put are you an admission seeker into any of the tertiary institutions in Nigeria and abroad? Then it is necessary you read through this article for better understanding on HOW TO GAIN DIRECT UNIVERSITY ADMISSION INTO 200 level IN YOUR DESIRED UNIVERSITY AND COURSE WITHOUT JAMB!!!

WELCOME to Myadmissionlink Educational Consult(MEC) a registered and government approved educational resource center that specializes in providing platform for university education both in Nigeria and Abroad.

IJMB: Easiest way to Secure University Admission Without JAMB

Securing admission into higher institution nowadays as become a great problem especially for those trying to use UTME as the mode of Entry and we won't be out of element to accentuate that the number of applicants that gained university admission annually with UTME is in by no means proportionate with the number of applicants that are qualified for admission by the virtue of scoring the minimum benchmark for admission.

In fact, the tendency of securing admission yearly after crossing the hurdles of the traditional UTME, PUTME is nose diving or declining as clearly revealed by statistics: about 1.4million candidates writes JAMB(UTME) yearly and about 80% ends up not securing admission.

REASON not far-fetched; NUMEROUS APPLICANTS USING THE TRADITIONAL PLATFORM OF UTME TO APPLY FOR 100 LEVEL ADMISSION WITH LIMITED ADMISSION CHANCE.

SOLUTION:
It is seemingly easy to criticize and identify loopholes in a system but providing solution to curbing the pool of difficulties in securing university admission is our focus. We run a PROVEN, APPROVED and CERTIFIED PROGRAMME that qualifies students into 200 level in UNIVERSITY in NIGERIA
and ABROAD without UTME. Past TESTIMONIES( http://ijmbadmiss
ions.com/testimonials
) from our past students are ostensibly the best proof of the acceptability, universality and reliability of this programme(IJMB).

PROVEN : Annually about 15,000 applicant put in for the programme(IJMB) in which more than 12,000 candidates secure admission into 200 level into their choice of university and desire course easily thereby skipping 100level stress and cost as compared to JAMB with close to 1.7 million applicants and just 500,000 admitted into 100 level. THE DIFFERENCE IS CLEAR!

* APPROVED : The programme is approved by FEDERAL GOVERNMENT as a platform for securing university admission into university in Nigeria and outside.

Its moderated by ABU, Zaria with different institutes nationwide of which we are one of the approved institutes.

* CERTIFIED : By NIGERIA UNIVERSITY COMMISSION(NUC) as an Advanced level programme that qualify students into 200 level in the university upon successful completion of the programme. CHECK JAMB BROCHURE TO CONFIRM.

The rationale for enrolling for IJMB is that few students use this medium to apply for university admission as opposed to the congested UTME platform thus the chance of securing admission with IJMB is extremely high.

WHAT IS IJMBE?

IJMBE - Interim Joint Matriculation Board Examination was established in 1976 by INTERIM COMMON SERVICE AGENCY(ICSA). It is an Advanced level programme that secures students 200L admission in the university in NIGERIA and ABROAD without JAMB. This programme is certified by Nigeria University Commission(NUC) as a requirement for university education - check page 4 of JAMB brochure, item 2(2) to confirm the
legitimacy. See details about IJMB here http://ijmbadmissions.com/about.php

WHY SHOULD I REGISTER FOR IJMBE?

*Multiple admission opportunities via Direct Entry

*Result do not expire

* Easy 200 level admission in the university

*Advanced level programme = advance academic knowledge

*Result is internationally accepted(we have partners university abroad that accept IJMB result)

*Chances of admission higher(up to 80%)

*No JAMB needed or PUTME

* You can enroll with awaiting result

* And lots more...

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS TO START IJMBE

Peace Hyde shares inspirational message on learning from mistakes and growing stronger

#FaithbuilderFamily ever wonder WHY things are NOT going the WAY YOU want them to go? From my experience and observation, life ONLY presents us "SECOND CHANCES" when we LEARN from from our mistakes the FIRST TIME AROUND. If there is SOMETHING you are supposed to DEAL WITH or have been PROCRASTINATING... DO IT NOW!!!. That thing you have been putting off could be the BARRIER stopping your NEXT OPPORTUNITY from coming through. The point of life and its lessons is to LEARN, GROW and GET STRONGER. If you aren't following the RULES and SIGNS and fundamentally the LESSONS presented to YOU, you won't GROW and LEARN. The people we were 5 years or even a year ago is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from WHO we are NOW. Life gives you CHALLENGES to see if you can OVERCOME THEM in order for you to go to a HIGHER LEVEL! Start tackling your PROBLEMS, GOALS, to do's, PEOPLE etc because it's ALL happening for a REASON and you won't know UNTIL you reach the NEXT POINT and realise WHY! Your BLESSINGS are waiting for YOU #Faithbuilderon that NEXT LEVEL! GO GET IT!!!..

11 School Articles That Reminds Us Of Growing Up

1. Ali and Simbi

Ali is a boy, Simbi is a girl. Mr. Salami is a man, Mrs. Salami is a woman.
Ali helps his father in rearing the cattle during holiday while Simbi helps her mother at their cotton farm.

2. Eze Goes To School

“Eze! Wake up!” Joseph hissed from beside me.
I groaned in protest as he whipped my blanket from around me. An especially cold draft wafted over my exposed body and I shivered. “Wetin dey worry you?” I growled sleepily.

3. Agbo Malika

Agbo Malaika Lived in the town of Lagun which was not far from Ibadan. He had so may friends. He was in primary four. Agbo was a lucky boy because his parents were rich.
One day, Agbo was sick while taking one of his exams. He contemplated telling the teacher that he was sick, but decided against it, because he felt the teacher would assume he was simply faking and the reason was that he did not know the answers to the questions. When he got home, his mom asked him about the exams and he told him about his illness. She said that he should have told her and she would have told him to stay back. When the results came out, he scored very low and when the teacher inquired, he chalked it up to his previous illness.

4. Owie the flute player

He faked his death because he wanted to see how much his people loved him and how they could not do without him. They gave him a fine burial but d casket contained banana peels instead. They got a new flute player and forgot about Owie. Owie was mad and came out of hiding. The king was angry and Owie was told to go back to the land of d dead. I think that should be in pry 6 reader. The page has the picture of Owie wanting to seize the flute from the new flute player who was dressed in white.

5. Mr. Nwosu on Christmas Day

Edet lives in Calabar, he is 8 years old, Every morning he goes to school, but in the evening he stays at home. His mother buys him books form the bookshop. Today is Friday, Edet and his cousins are eating chicken and rice.

7. Emeka, Wakama and Kunle

8. Malam Gandoki

9. ALAWIYE IWE

Did you actually read these books? I sure know you will want to get them again that is why we have gone extra miles to get this rare collection for your reading pleasures once again. They are good gift for your friends,  and business partners to be in their good book.

10. Tales by Moonlight

This was one of my favorite TV shows on NTA (Nigerian Television Authority) when I was a little girl. I looked forward to watching Tales by Moonlight every Sunday evening when ‘aunty’ told folktales to a group of boys and girls perched on the floor listening intently to her story. Each tale was enacted by actors (and some of the kids) where they played many animal roles (the folktales were full of tortoise stories) and the acting may have been poor (as someone pointed out to me recently) but I loved it. At the end of each tale, the kids took turns to tell 'aunty' what they learned from the story.

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE "PACKAGING" FRENZY

The universe is a wonderful place full of beautifully adorned ladies and elegantly assembled men. The popular saying “all that glitters is not gold” can be ascribed to many Nigerians who are in pursuit of that glitz and glamour and will do whatever it takes to achieve that. We all just need to look the part and this mindset has lead to the ‘Over-Packaging’ frenzy!
We hereby present to you the different categories of packaging/packagers;

The “Borrowers”

If you happen to be in the category of those that borrow just to shine and look like you are the “shit”, please STOP!!! Especially when you have friends that are likely to disgrace you on social media if you spoil the shoe or bag they borrowed you. Girls even go as far as borrowing weaves, nawa o! While some men are in debt, just so they can impress their girlfriends and meet up to their friends standard, they borrow items ranging from their wristwatch to the cars they drive (God help you if they are not even Uber drivers).

Regular make-up studio visitors

This is the category of people who require a facebeat by a well recognized MUA (Makeup Artist) for every party or event they attend. We all want to look good from time to time but why do some girls spend so much on paying a make-up artist to “panel beat” their face every weekend, even when they can’t conveniently afford it. This is definitely part of the package, it is understood that no one wants eyebrows looking like horns on a Sallah ram; everybody wants “fleeky” eyebrows, but please you don’t have to impress people at your own inconvenience.

The Abgada Clan.

White starched Agbada is one of starter pack items for a well packaged Nigerian man, some who are referred to as “demons”. These days, nobody wants to rock suits to weddings anymore (of which weddings are the new hangout spots and that's where the biggest fishes are caught *wink*). The Agbada now comes with so much “sweg” which automatically makes you look like the CEO of rich gang, you will even see some with “don jazzy’s stick” and pistol looking cigars in their mouth, all in the name of creating an impression. Ladies, BEWARE!!! Not all white agbadas are truly white.

Living that Gram and Snapchat Perfect Life.

I overheard a friend saying, “Nah, it is not gram worthy”, as she deletes a picture that does not properly highlight her assets. It got me thinking. We are all guilty of this; we always want to show our best side on Instagram and Snapchat. It’s great to be living that perfect life and if we can’t live the perfect life, to what extent do we go to make it look like we are?
In a discussion about pressure from the society on young people, someone said that women feel pressured to look a certain way, dress and package a certain way. Men are also guilty of this. I doubt people actually go out to have fun these days, because some people are more concerned about snapchatting the amount of bottles they are popping at the club.

The "Islanders".

The struggle to live on the island these days is real, that's why you will see 10 guys cramped up in one cubicle they call a flat. So basically, telling a guy/girl that you live on the island creates the illusion that you are ‘boxed up’ and this helps to further boost the package and gives it finishing touches. Nobody wants to even hangout on the mainland anymore, the island status has to be activated.

FG Cannot Pay The N248 Billion Demanded By ASUU Due To Recession - Minister

The Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chris Ngige has stated that efforts to resolve the crisis between ASUU and the Federal Government was stalled due to the fact that the union is demanding N248 Billion as payment for earned allowance.

He mentioned that among the 8 demands presented by ASUU, it is only the issue of earned allowance that is still unresolved.

According to him, the Federal Government will not be able to cough out such an amount of money at the moment considering that the economy of the nation is currently in recession.

He further stated that the government proposed to be paying a certain amount to ASUU on a monthly basis pending when the first tranche of money earlier disbursed to ASUU for that purpose will be audited.

However, ASUU brought up a counter proposal which made the two parties to retreat to allow further consultations after which they will reconvene to continue negotiation and hopefully resolve the issue.
